    Reflux

Can someone please give me some advice as to what positions to avoid or positions that would help a baby that has a reflux problem. The baby is in my class so I would like to be as knowledgable as possible.

I have heard that inversion are good for this, if so, please can someone explain why so that I can relay this to mum.

    Thanks v much

    Re: Reflux

    Hi Clare

I am not a yoga teacher but an infant aquatics teacher, I am also a mummy to a now 3 year old who suffered badly from reflux up until quite recently. My advice would be to keep him upright and avoid lying on the back as this causes the acid to rise back up the oesophagus which my little one is now able to describe as fire in his throat. I'd be interested to know if inversions are a good idea too.

    Re: Reflux

    Hi Clare,

I am the administrator for this site.  I want to encourage everyone to use the resources already here (as well as here what others are learning - hint, hint to all you experienced Birthlighters) and so I took the word "reflux" and put it into the search function (top righthand corner of this site's pages) and got 10 hits which you can see here:

     http://birthlightforum.com/search/SearchResults.aspx?q=reflux

You will find that there is one hit from the old forums.  If you click on its link you will be taken to a web page that has many posts from the old days and the reflux discussion is buried in there somewhere.  It may help you to pinpoint where it is in there by using your Internet Explorer search function to search the page once you get there (go to EDIT -> FIND ON THIS PAGE from the Internet Explorer menu).

    Cheers,
    Jeff

    Re: Reflux

Hi Clare I teach baby massage and yoga to children with complex physical disabilities and health needs. I have been working with these children for 8 years and I also have a son (similar needs) who has suffered with terrible reflux for 19 years.  In my groups I always use a horse-shoe cushion to ensure children with reflux keep their chest / throat area raised above their stomach and we keep a strict rule that feeds / drinks are not given 30 mins before class or during class. All postures are demonstrated individually to ensure they meet the needs of each child to ensure that children with reflux receive each move / posture / stretch delivered slowly and deliberately. You may well find that he /she is not yet quite ready for rotation but it will be important for them to experience prone positions that do not require the use of their stomach muscles - as this increases the likelihood of reflux. I would not suggest inversions as those with reflux often have a swollen esophagus which can compromise swallowing and could lead to aspiration (breathing in stomach contents).

In my experience (I assess children for sensory dysfunction as part of a larger team) reflux is often associated with an inability to process tactile input so ensure the child has received enough firm, deep and deliberate massage before they are expected to move on to more structured handling. Suggest to mum that she may want to consult the local dietician / feeding specialist who may want to look more closely at the child's diet (lactose intolerant?); if this child suffers with regular coughs or wheezing after feeds it could indicate aspiration so asking this question could be vital before proceeding with vestibular / rotational movement and definitely rule out inversions until this has been assessed properly. Hope this helps
