Great idea about sharing books and this is the perfect medium for asking if anyone can loan the book or knows where to get it. I hope someone has "The Social Toddler" for you to loan.

Just one hint - when posting a message please be sure that the "enable email subscriptions" button is clicked by you (the poster) so that others will receive email notifications of your message. Otherwise the post may go unnoticed by some people.

Sorry for the delay - I'm trying to get my Baby Yoga coursework completed! And I'm in search of a book myself - The Social Toddler - which I'd love to borrow if anyone has it and that has prompted me to get going with this idea.

I think the idea of publishing book reviews is a great one and if there is a way of contacting people and asking their permission to do this, it would be a great resource. I've just written an extra review as part of my coursework as I was feeling very enthusiastic about two books and wanted to let people know about them. It adds extra importance to the writing of our book reviews if we know they'll be used by fellow teachers and students, I think.

I also love the virtual library idea - I have loads of books gathering dust (lots of it at the moment as we have building work going on!) and would be happy to loan them out. What's the next step to get it up & running?

Hi Victoria,

This is a great initiative, as there are so many new books -and older ones too- and the book reviews written in the last years as part of the diploma coursework constitute a valuable resource for all Birthlight members. There are two points here:

1. posting book reviews on the website: I would like to ask teachers if they are willing to have their book reviews posted on the website, and if so, whether with an acknowledgment of their authorship or anonymously. I hope that seeing reviews will not detract diploma candidates to carefully read books and review them.

2. those teachers who agree to have their book reviews posted in their name can then decide whether they wish to enter a loaning network. Some people do not like to lend their books. Some do, however, and this would be a great circulation of information and more than that, another way of creating community among teachers and trainees. There must be a form signed by borrowers about compensation for damage or loss of book so that the lenders would not lose out. In the years that I had a library at my teaching venue I have lost very few books, less than through casual borrowing by friends!
I think that Sally has a similar experience.

3. and an additional point. We all have busy lives and looking for a book, packing it and taking it to the post office can be an extra task. If you would like to coordinate a virtual Birthlight library from your home, go ahead. I am sure quite a few people would donate books or DVDs. I would be happy to contribute and also for you to list some of the books that I do not want to donate but would agree to loan to a trainee teacher for review. This means making a list, keeping it up to date and tracking the owners and the borrowers. If this is a Trust activity, it must be non-profit but there could be a small fee charged to cover your expenses, something like £1 per book.

Being a bookworm I like the idea a lot and thank you for your posting on behalf of all Birthlight members

Diploma book reviews & loan of books

I posted a whie ago enquiring about one of the required books for the Baby Yoga diploma. Francoise has suggested that we could post book reviews for the core texts on the website & teachers could indicate whether they are wiling to loan ot any of the books that they have. I'm happy to coordinate this - Francoise, maybe you could let me know how best to go ahead with this. Can we use the book reviews that people write as part of their coursework?

Is anyone else happy to review and/or loan out books?
